Your role:

As a Mechanical Engineer (known in the Navy as Marine Engineer), you’ll get hands-on experience and responsibility early in your career. You’ll be leading the team that looks after the mechanical aspects of the ship or submarine both at sea and ashore. As the technical expert onboard, you’ll be responsible for the vessel’s structures and systems, anticipating and solving challenges, and making sure everything runs smoothly. 

This is a dynamic role that will see you working with billions of dollars of brand new technology as well as leading a team of talented people to help you get the job done. Being willing to step into a role as a leader and mentor, to guide your team and offer advice, is an essential part of what it means to succeed. Basically, you need to be a good people person and no two days are ever the same.    

Within this role there’s the option to specialise and join as a Mechanical Engineer Submariner, taking on the crucial position of keeping the submarine running. You’ll work as part of a tight-knit team to manage propulsion, provide electricity and maintain airflow. This keeps the crew comfortable and the submarine propelling, placing Mechanical Engineer Submariners at the very core of sub-surface Navy operations.

You’ll be responsible for a variety of systems and structures. Some of these include, but aren’t limited to:

• Leading and looking after your team of engineering personnel,
• The ship or submarine’s structure,
• Propulsion systems,
• Electrical generation and distribution,
• Domestic and associated mechanical services,
• Main and auxiliary machinery,
• Engines,
• Air conditioning,
• Hydraulics.

Life as a Mechanical Engineer is constantly changing, with new challenges regularly emerging as the Navy introduces new ships, technology and systems. To meet these challenges, you’ll complete a variety of internal courses and will have the opportunity for postgrad training at different universities throughout your career.

In addition to your core duties as Mechanical Engineer, you’ll be heavily involved in people and resource management, scheduling and finances that are relevant to your role.

Salary:

When you first join the Navy and while studying for your degree at the university of your choice, you will be paid between $35,326 and $54,166 depending on your year of study.

Upon completion of your degree and initial military and employment training, you’ll enjoy a competitive starting salary package of up to: $97,908 including service and uniform allowances, as well as a maritime allowance (if applicable).

In addition to your salary, including while you are at university, you will receive generous superannuation, housing subsidies and free medical and dental care.
