Who are we?

Johnson Winter & Slattery was started by three lawyers who wanted to do things differently. We've grown rapidly to become one of Australia's leading independent firms and have offices in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth.

Working with us will give you all the benefits that come with working for a leading law firm and much more. We will put you at the forefront of the corporate world, working with our clients on their most complex and business critical legal work - it's what we do best.

It's our people that really sets us apart. We pride ourselves on being down to earth, approachable and, quite simply, a great place to work.

You will be given the opportunity to work on matters impacting major Australian and international corporations, and on some of the most challenging transactions throughout Australia and surrounding regions.

In addition to 'on the job' training you will also have the opportunity to learn from our specially designed training program for junior lawyers. Learning, development and mentoring are key features on both of our programs and you will be well supported by a network of colleagues. As a graduate lawyer, the firm will also cover your college of law expenses and will provide you with a dedicated college of law tutor that will deliver a bespoke PLT program.

What are we looking for?

We are currently looking to hire law clerks for our office in Perth. As a law clerk, you will be given the opportunity to work for 2 – 3 days per week whilst completing your university studies. The role will also offer you the opportunity to complete a 3 week's full time winter clerkship in our Perth office from 27 June 2022 to 15 July 2022.

Following the successful completion of the clerkship, you will be considered for a position in our future Graduate Programs.

Our casual work and clerkship will give you an opportunity to familiarise yourself with the types of work that are on offer to junior lawyers, our culture, and help you build your professional network within the firm.

Why choose us?

  • Accelerate your career: Our flexible team structure means you will not be held back. Our lawyers take on the work that reflects their ability, not their job title. You'll also benefit from your own structured and bespoke professional development program. There are no barriers to your success with us.
  • Go your own way: Our business model is different to other firms. We want our lawyers to focus on the quality of their legal work and client experience. That means you won't be under pressure to meet billing targets. You will compete with your adversaries, not your peers.
  • It's a vibe thing: What truly sets us apart is our people. We pride ourselves on being down to earth, approachable, but always high performing. Our ethos is: "we're in it together" – it’s the cornerstone of our business and what we live by.

Join us!

If you are enthusiastic, driven to succeed and want to continually develop your skills, you'll fit right in.

We're looking for graduates who have not only excelled academically, but have great communications skills, thrive in a collaborative environment and want to deliver legal advice to create the best outcomes for our clients.

Written applications should include a covering letter, CV and current official academic transcript. They should be addressed to Wilma Lewis, Senior People & Development Consultant.

As a graduate at JWS your graduate day-to-day responsibilities include legal research, drafting advice, performing due diligence or discovery tasks and general matter management work.

My daily responsibilities differ but I'm being given work I know I can handle. Some of the tasks are a bit menial to complete but overall it hasn't been anything overtly challenging yet.

Pros and cons of working at Johnson Winter Slattery

Pros

  • You are given the opportunity to try many different areas of law without being confined to a specific team.

  • I like that there is a true non-siloed approach for graduates so that you can experience all practice areas. Despite being a mid-sized firm we do a lot of what would be considered "top-tier" work for interesting and multinational clients. There is a very hands-on approach here and I am able to have direct access to senior practitioners. The hours are good.

  • Flexible and understanding culture, great people, diverse and engaging work

  • We don't do rotations so you're able to work in a variety of different areas and can ask to work on specific things you are interested in. Everyone is lovely to work with and are very accommodating and flexible.

Cons

    • Sometimes it is difficult to get consistent and ongoing work.

    • The non-siloed approach comes with its challenges in managing different commitments across different practice groups as well as searching out your own work. If you have a can-do attitude and good time management skills you can overcome these challenges.
