What's your job about?

As part of the Mainfreight family, I currently work alongside our national and global team to help create print and digital material that enables our team to showcase our service offerings and our unique culture. On a day to day basis I get to work with our Group Sales Manager, National Sales Managers, General Managers and our Sales and Account Management teams across the country.

One of the things I love most about my role is that I get to work across all our different brands / services including air and ocean, wharf cartage, warehousing, domestic and hazardous transportation. No week ever looks the same for me in this role which is something I really enjoy as it keeps my work life very interesting.

Some of the key projects I have been working on recently include updating our group supply chain print material, developing and updating our internal sales system and working with our global team to brainstorm creative ways we can share Mainfreight with the world.

What's your background?

I grew up on the Gold Coast in Queensland where I had lived for my whole life before I made the move to Melbourne in January of 2018. After completing my school education in 2012, I went on to complete a Diploma in Events Management mid 2013 before starting a Bachelor of Business in Event Management. At the end of 2013, with the credits gained from my Diploma I had completed half of my Event Management degree before coming to the realisation that Event Management wasn’t what I wanted to do with my life.

Unsure of what to do from there I decided to defer my university degree for 2014, pack my bags and head to Europe. Three months in Europe and one expired visa later I returned home and worked full time for the rest of the year.

In 2015 I started back at university, this time in a Bachelor of Business in Marketing and Logistics and Supply Network Management. In my last year of university I was fortunate enough to have received a scholarship from Mainfreight and had secured myself a position on the graduate program. I began working at Mainfreight as a casual in our Gold Coast and Brisbane branches in my last semester of uni before graduating. It was in January of 2018 that I moved to Melbourne to officially start on the Mainfreight graduate program and I haven’t looked back since.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Absolutely! That’s one of the best things about Mainfreight, if you are passionate and have a realistic goal of something you would like to achieve whether that be taking on a new role, or even changing career paths completely, the Mainfreight team will always support you in making your goal obtainable. This is all part of our strong promote from within culture, just because you don’t have the skill set required for a certain role doesn’t mean that role isn’t right for you, it might not be right for you today but if it’s something you really want to do Mainfreight will help get you there.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

One of the coolest things about my role is the fact that I get to work with so many different team members, locally, nationally and even across the globe. It’s not just meeting different people and getting to know different faces, it’s about actually getting to work on projects with different teams and being involved in making decisions that help shape our future as a company. It’s so refreshing to be in a workplace where I am always made to feel like my input is valid and encouraged, even by those that have been around for a lot longer than me.

What are the limitations of your job?

I would say the main limitation I face in my role is there just isn’t enough time in a day. There is always a new project on the go for me which means that at times my to do list can feel like it’s never ending, but I enjoy the challenge. One of the things I have had to learn to do in my role is prioritising tasks, being realistic with timeframes and not over promising on how much I can feasibly get done. As an eager grad ready to get my hands on anything and everything I sometimes have to step back and remind myself there is only one of me and only so much I can get done in one day.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  1. Back yourself
  2. Never say no to an opportunity just because you feel underprepared
  3. Hearing no or getting knocked back on an opportunity isn’t always a bad thing

For me these things are so important, I have at times felt like maybe I am not prepared enough for an opportunity or that someone else would be more suited, but I always put my hand up anyway. I try to live by the mentality of ‘what’s the worst that can happen, they say no?’. It not always about being the best or being the most prepared, if you want something enough you will do what it takes to succeed once you get the opportunity and you will be surprised by the support you get along the way. If you don’t get the opportunity the first time around at least you have shown an interest. When that opportunity comes around again you will be more prepared and better yet you will already be on the minds of those with the opportunity to give.
