About this course

The Graduate Certificate of Public Art at Monash prepares you for success in the nuanced landscape of public art commissions. Our course arms creatives with the skills to negotiate the public art domain from concept through to completion.

Public art is a burgeoning field that can open up complex and inclusive ideas of where we are as a society. This intensive, 6-month course has been developed to make public art opportunities easier to access. It has been designed to create the channels you need to negotiate in real terms, and generate the confidence for you to communicate your ideas.

The course will build your ability to think critically and deeply about context, give you a capacity to communicate ideas effectively, and develop skills to collaborate with large groups of people from a range of different disciplines.

Guided by some of Australia's most influential artists, designers and academics working in the field, you will gain theoretical and technical skills and detailed knowledge of processes and techniques for tendering submissions.

You'll gain an understanding of historical and theoretical context in engaging public art; from the perspective of public monuments, through the various practices of the 20th century to more recently, and public art's function in proactive social commentary.

As part of the coursework, you'll have access to expert knowledge in writing strategic plans, putting together finance, insurance, right through to imaging their concept and 3D rendering.

You'll graduate with the skills and knowledge you need to successfully navigate complex procedures with councils, government agencies, funding bodies, private companies and other stakeholders, as well as detailed knowledge of processes and techniques for tendering submissions.

Your learning will take place in the collaborative Monash Art Projects (MAP) studio, led by Professor Callum Morton, Director of MAP and celebrated artist of renowned public artworks.

This course is for anyone with an interest in public art, not just artists interested in breaking into making public artworks. In the past, we have had architects, urban planners, artists, engineers and a drone pilot. It can equally appeal to someone working in council or a festival director or curator. The diverse makeup of the cohort makes for an interesting cross-section of creatives who collaborate and feed off each other.
