Our graduate program

Our graduate program is run in Melbourne and Sydney, starting in March 2025.

As a Legal Transformation Graduate at Allens, you’ll complete two six month rotations in different innovation and legal solutions teams. You’ll team up with subject matter experts, use cutting edge legal technology and work alongside Australia’s most talented lawyers.  Please note, this is not a law graduate position and the program will not lead to qualification as a practicing lawyer. Our Legal Transformation Graduates do not complete PLT/GDLP equivalent.

Upon successful completion of the program you’ll be offered a role within one of our four participating legal transformation program teams.

We believe that we stand out as an employer because of our high-quality technical training and excellent learning environment. We’ll work with you to develop your understanding of the legal industry and build your skills, providing the foundation you need to become a successful legal professional.

Our graduate program is a stepping stone to bigger things – at the completion of the program successful graduates will be offered a permanent role at Allens. Here is a quick rundown of what you can look forward to:

  • a personalised induction program that introduces you to our people and the work we do;
  • on-the-job training with support from innovation, legal technology and project management professionals,
  • the opportunity to work alongside some of the best legal professionals in Australia,
  • learning opportunities across teams, practice streams and work-types, as we don't work in silos;
  • the chance to work on real projects and deliver services for many of Australia's and the world's top 100 companies;
  • enrolment and formal training in a Graduate Certificate program in Legal Tech & Innovation where you will develop the critical thinking skills needed to assess and adopt new technologies to drive innovation in client services and work settings;
  • seminars that will build a strong foundation of skills to help you thrive in our ever‑changing industry;
  • social events, where you will really get to know us; and,
  • the opportunity to get involved in community and pro bono work, and learn about our committees and interest groups.

Applications are open to students in all locations who are in their final year of their studies. Applications will close at 11:55pm (AEST) on Tuesday, 11 April 2024. Please address your application to Manreet Singh, National Manager Early Careers. For further information, visit our website or email Student.Careers@allens.com.au.

I have done a variety of legal work whilst here. This has included being directly involved in contractual negotiations (and corresponding amendments), drafting and finalising semi-contractual documents (notices, letters, annexures etc.), providing legal advices and some non-legal work such as business development.

Pros and cons of working at Allens

Pros

  • Great training, large teams, larger matters, great exposure to the market early in career.

  • The people are very down to earth and fun but incredibly intelligent at the same time.

  • The work is also diverse and intellectually stimulating.

  • Allens invests a lot of time and resources into training its junior lawyers... providing 'on the job' training.

  • A supportive work environment, which supports individuals to take responsibility for their own careers.

Cons

    • Pay is lower than comparable firms.

    • The hours can be long during busy periods and once you're off the Legal Services Award.

    • Hierarchy.

    • The unsteady workflow.

    • The standard of work and reputation of the firm is very high which can feel crushing and overwhelming.
