Please tell us about promotion possibilities and fill us in on what it takes to move up the ranks.
I have touched on this earlier but I think there is sufficient promotion opportunities to allow an entire career to flourish within the one place. I have remarked to my family and friends that I can easily see me just staying here for the rest of my career (notwithstanding that I am extremely ambitious) because there is ample opportunity to grow, develop and be promoted.

There's pros and cons about Allens' 2x 12 month rotations compared to other firms that do 3-4 shorter rotations. I can't comment fully as I'm yet to finish the program, but it does feel like associate is a very long way away! In terms of career progression, Allens opens so many doors both domestically and overseas, so I'm excited for where my career might go.

Lots of opportunity to move up internally or out of practice into an in house lawyer role.

The progression has occurred in line with the expected trajectory at this stage of my career. I am unable to speak for how that will look in a few years time once I have settled. Looking at those around me, they seem to be satisfied with their progression.

Journey goes - paralegal, clerk, senior paralegal, graduate, lawyer, associate, senior associate, managing associate, partner Promotion relies on positive 360 feedback which I think encourages great behaviours and positive interactions between employees. I imagine billable hours also play a part

The promotion and career progression structure is very transparent, and oftentimes tied to the years you have been with the firm (especially as a younger lawyer). Working with highly skilled/intelligent peers, good training, and exposure to work of a first-rate caliber, there are also many opportunities to progress externally.

Large firm, so need to hit certain time lengths to be promoted + build out experience and CV. Emphasis on being at the competency level needed at promoted level before being promoted. But big firm and lots of promotions each year.

Until we become associates, there's a standard progression pathway which is consistent to everyone. After that, it becomes merit-based - and I've seen examples of SAs being made up earlier than usual. It seems like that usually happens where an SA has demonstrated exceptional ability (i) with clients and (ii) managing matters.

Lots of people so hard to get a promotion and occurs based on arbitrary timeframes.

I feel that it is generally easy to be promoted and recognised for your contribution to the firm. There is a structured program of check-ins with performance coaches, and most senior staff take a genuine interest in people within the company so they have a finger on the pulse about who is contributing to the work / culture at the firm. Between these two things it is quite easy for contributions to be noticed by senior staff.

Eventually merit based, not age / time based, though initially everyone advances at the same rate.

I really like the 'career deal' plan that Allens has. Career progression after you make associate at the two and a half year mark, is based on merit rather than years spent at the firm.

You clearly have to work hard to move through the ranks but it is easily possible and you wont be held back if you deserve it. Promotion is time based for the first couple of years, then becomes all on merit which is good to know.

The firm has a merit-based career model, where employees are promoted once they have reached particular standards in their work, team management and participation in other firm activities.
Graduate, Sydney - 16 Jul 2019
For the first few years it seems to just be about doing the time, but after that its clear those who are passionate and good at what they do are rewarded

We control our own career progression and have numerous feedback sessions throughout the year.
Graduate, Perth - 16 Jul 2019
Grads always do 2 year-long rotations, then settle in one of their rotation areas. After that, promotion is merit based, so can be quick as long as you reach the required skill level. The opportunities seem excellent.
Graduate, Sydney - 16 Jul 2019
The company has an entirely transparent "career deal" that is used to promote employees based on merit.
