Management at Allens

8.9
8.9 rating for Management, based on 50 reviews
How accessible are managers and do they make good mentors? You may want to address internal communication, performance feedback or praise and recognition.
My team has been quite busy, so the oversight can be a little light on at times. I am told this isn't how things normally operate. I would prefer things to be a bit more hands on.

I really like my partner and SA who I do most of my work for - they give great feedback and instructions, really value my time and contribution, and want to help me develop and grow at the firm. Everyone in my wider practice group is really lovely and approachable, and I often go to other juniors for advice and tips.

My managers are personally really accessible and great mentors. They always make me feel good and give praise when they're happy with my work. They also help me to improve my work by giving detailed feedback and helping me to improve individual pieces of work.

They are very accessible. I've had a great experience with my manager who has offered some very wise, practical and helpful advice. And really makes me feel encouraged, supported and valued. I'm also impressed with the courage of the firm in taking a view on social issues that resonate with me.

The performance feedback structure can be informal (especially if you actively ask for feedback), but there is also a formal system in place with a Partner (quarterly). In my experience, the mentorship has been first-class and well-communicated. Sometimes people may be less accessible if they are going through very busy periods, but if you put in the effort to schedule time aside this is usually no bar to contacting them.

This is team dependant. Some people are excellent (ie, 10). Some people are very poor (ie, 3 or 4).

The managers and partners are all very approachable and relatable - this makes it great when asking or receiving feedback.

Great manager - very invested in development, opportunities to learn, emphasis on W/L balance (as much as can be done in corporate legal environment).

We're generally very well managed and I think Allens take leadership seriously.

I'm in the rare position of sharing an office with my formal mentor, whom I speak with basically daily about how I'm feeling about the job and my performance. I think lawyers at the firm recognise how empowering praise can be and are generous with it, and are gentle with constructive feedback.

Very good. Couldn't ask for better.

The managers at the firm as a whole are very competent. They are leaders in their field, set a good example of relationship management with clients and are approachable for juniors. There are a small number of managers who are very good technical lawyers but have less experience with managing juniors. In these cases, it is necessary to learn how to 'manage up' to some extent.

Most of my supervisors are fantastic.

I meet with my performance coach monthly for a scheduled review but can always ask for feedback more often.

I get to share an office with my supervising partner, which means that I get plenty of direct contact with him. He is a fantastic mentor. I get feedback and recognition for my work on a regular basis.

Super accessible. I share an office with a partner who is also my performance coach so I am constantly learning by osmosis and have him there as a sounding board and for feedback while I'm working, even on matters not for him. I think the fact partners are willing to share an office with a grad is a testament to the importance the firm, or at least certain partners, place on development.

Very accessible and great mentors with so much knowledge and wisdom to share. They are really genuinely interested in helping us grow and achieve our potential.

Partners can be hard to get hold of at short notice since they are busy but I have had good levels of interaction, feedback and praise so far.
Graduate, Sydney - 16 Jul 2019
The partners are often very busy and, in my experience, rarely initiate mentoring, however they will happily make time if you ask them. Associate level mentors have been incredibly welcoming and generous with their time. There are formal performance feedback mechanisms with 100 day 'check ins' required by partners.
