Pros & Cons

  • The ability to learn new things every day.
  • The best thing about working at NZX is how welcoming and inclusive everyone is. All staff, no matter what level of the organisation, are genuinely interested and supportive of the Graduates. This results in many opportunities to gain exposure and learn from both your own team, and other areas of the business, as well has having a commitment to career progression.
  • The support that I have received since the first day of my employment. The work environment at NZX encourages my growth and has supported my development in my professional career.
  • Interesting to be at the centre of the New Zealand stock market. Everyone is very friendly and all levels of management are open to chatting or helping you out.
  • The regular social events, and the flexible work + life balance offered
  • Sometimes working under subsidiary companies feels different, as companies have different approaches to applying policy. There is limited rotation on the Grad Programme and the rotation term is yearly.
  • We are in a temporary office right now, so I haven't had the chance to build relationships with many people as much as I would have hoped by now. I am sure it will happen when we return to our normal office though.
  • Days when there is a large amount of work to complete can get very busy and have to work late to finish everything before market closes or end of day.
  • Sometimes the work can be slightly mundane.
  • Being new to the industry it can be quite hard learning about the numerous different business functions.

NZX has a very flat hierarchy and encourages collaboration between different teams and role levels. When in the office, there is an emphasis on asking questions and sharing knowledge in order to produce the best work possible. NZX has a great social aspect, with many events occurring both in the office, and outside of office hours. There is no pressure to attend these events, however it is a great opportunity to further build on the relationships made in the working environment.

My role is managing the back-end, operational side of the market. My day-to-day includes tracking latest announcements, corporate actions, and trading events for listed companies. These tasks are managed across my team and as most things need to be done within market hours every day is different and can get exciting.

My managers have all been very accessible and are always willing and open to help with any questions or concerns. They valued my opinion from Day One, and provide both praise and criticism in an appropriate way.

Recruitment

Recruitment
The hiring process was very easy for the graduate programme. Following my application, I was invited to attend an assessment day at NZX. This was a great opportunity to get a feel for the organisation, and meet the employees and other applicants. Most of the questions were situational based "can you tell us about a time when...", this required me to think on the spot about specific stories that have helped me grow and learn. Also questions such as why I was interested in the role, in my sector, what I am most proud of etc, which were good for me to express my personal thoughts. Put your best self forward in your application, study the NZX values and think of examples of times you displayed those values. At the interview day, don't worry so much about being the perfect student candidate, get to know everyone and make an effort to talk to the senior management to make a good impression.

I am very satisfied with my pay for my role and graduate level. Generous sick leave policy, jolly trolley (drinks and snacks on a Friday), fruit and biscuits in the office, discounted health insurance, free flu jab etc.

Training
One of the best things about working at NZX is that you are doing real work from the first week. The new starter training I completed involved lots of learning whilst working with more experienced team members. There are also workshops completed as part of the Graduate Programme that teaches you about general work etiquette and styles. You are not expected to know everything from Day One!

Work Hours
Flexibility in hours is very dependent on the team you are in. In an operational role, your hours will be more structured as the market is only open in certain times. In my current role, my hours are more flexible and can be changed based on ad-hoc commitments. The best thing about the work schedule at NZX is that I am not expected to work overtime or on weekends and can switch off from work after hours.
